What happens when you stop minoxidil: back to baseline in 3–4 months
Also searched as: stopping Rogainequit minoxidilwhat happens when you stop minoxidil
If minoxidil is stopped, the pretreatment appearance normally returns within 3 or 4 months, and after several years of use the hair that was genetically programmed to be lost in that time will fall out (DermNet).
No consistent week-by-week window is published for this, so it is not on the calculator.
The timeline
| Stage | When (typically) | What's happening |
|---|---|---|
| Return to baseline | Within 3 or 4 months | DermNet: the pretreatment appearance will normally return within 3 or 4 months. [DermNet] |
| After years of use | Hair 'saved' during use falls out | Hair that was genetically programmed to be lost during that time will fall out. [DermNet] |
Starting vs stopping: two different clocks

The 'years of use' catch
If you used minoxidil for years, stopping does not return you to how you looked when you started — DermNet says the hair that would have been lost during those years will fall out too [DermNet]. That can look dramatic within a few months.
Normal vs. warning signs
- Gradual return to how hair looked before treatment over 3–4 months
- More noticeable loss after long-term use
- Patches or smooth bald spots
- Scalp pain, redness, burning or scaling
- Loss of eyebrows, eyelashes or body hair
- Rapid loss far beyond your pre-treatment pattern
What may help
- Discuss stopping or switching with the clinician who recommended it.
- Take dated photos now so you can compare honestly.
- Read our starting-minoxidil page if you are restarting.
